Segment 4: Organized Play and the Modern Pro Tour

Wizards of the Coast announced (and 48 hours later rescinded) major changes to platinum level benefits. They also announced the end of the Modern Pro Tour. What’s going on behind the scenes to drive these decisions, and what bearing will it have on the secondary market?

  1. Love the show, quick question. I’m in the process of foiling out my legacy lands deck and came across crop rotation. My question is should I wait and see if Crop will be in Eternal Masters are just go ahead and buy them now? I don’t see many copies out there and there sitting around $50 now. If they don’t get re-printed in Eternal Masters my fear is that they will probably go up to near $100. Your thoughts?

    1. I completely agree with carboreeta. Crop Rotation is exactly the type of card they could sneak into EMA or something similar. If you’re ok with modern foils, I’d wait until the full spoiler is released. If it doesn’t show up, just grab them immediately.

If, however, you’d prefer the old foils, just buy them now.

    2. Josh, I have a friend who has more than a general idea of what will be in Eternal Masters. If it was in vintage masters and isn’t on the reserved list it should be in Eternal Masters. Then obviously there are the open slots of reserved list cards that needs to be filled. I don’t know if crop rotation was in VMA, but if so it’s in EMA. No idea if that helps

There will be a window when the full spoiler hits to buy at the existing price if it isn’t reprinted. I would just have funds and a couple of good sellers ready to pull the trigger. This way the worst is you get it a little later at the current price, it may even fall a little just on the threat.

  3. Hey guys, btw, I do think you should change the name of the podcast to “MTG Weekly Finance” or something similar. A lot of times it’s not ‘fast’ and also may not be relevant due to financial events in magic that have already happened because of posting timing etc…

    My thoughts.

  4. What do u guys think of Jace Unraveler of Secrets in a few months? He’s around $10 and I expect him to keep dropping. I picked up Narset Transcendent when she was $6, thinking about doing the same for Jace. He’s not on your list but I like him to hit $15 minimum after origins rotates.

And James, how can I convince u to not lose money on Nahiri? ?

  5. With MTG I try to think about “room to grow”. A cheap rare has lots of room to grow. Tournament prize pay outs has lots of room to grow. This means that in the distant future when MTG interest begins to shrink, WOTC can up their payouts and get people interested again.

  6. Please read:

Trading cards in and out over and over again wins the day. A card that has a timeframe as a “pick” of over a month or two is useless to me as I’m going to put my money to work rather than “buy and hold”.

Thats sort of the “lazy” strategy, you can make a buck or two off a card 2-3 times a week every week, as opposed to buying something at 10 and hoping it goes to 20 in 6 months is , well… just not relevant for an active trader.

I’d like to see “short term pics” rather than this sort of mid-long term ideology. If you are willing to work for it, thats were the money is.
