Many will look back at 2015 with shaded glasses, unwilling to think critically about the data that now lies behind us. Money can no longer be made in 2015, so it’s easy to strictly focus on what’s ahead, ignoring valuable lessons from behind. It is certainly easy to do so – humans are creatures of habit, and our conscious mind is inherently lazy. That’s all right, don’t feel bad, my mind is lazy too.
But this morning, as I ponder the most important trends to me throughout 2015, I force myself to think critically about where I am today and where I want to focus next year. So at the risk of giving you yet another cliché “year in review” article, I think it’s important I share some really impactful observations throughout 2015. These five trends will be based solely in data, and require heightened scrutiny next year as I continue to strive towards my MTG financial goals – a full tuition for my son’s college education.
One day at a time.
Hi Sig,
I typed out a super long comment and then deleted it. Basically it was pinpointing why I think 2015 was a down/bad year for Magic both financially and for players. I hope 2016 is better.
Happy holidays and Happy New Year.
Spencer,
I’m sorry you decided to delete it. I would have been curious to see what your gut reaction was to my article. I could certainly agree with an argument that this was a weak year for MTG Finance. Profitable opportunities in Standard were sparse, but there were a few. I made some solid money in Modern by selling most of my Modern collection (including my one deck) over the summer – a move that paid out VERY well in terms of loss avoidance. Legacy was a hurt, and I lost a little on some Duals I was investing in.
But I have a ton of “paper” (i.e. non-realized) gains in old school cards!!! :-). So overall I’d say 2015 was successful for me despite a less traditional approach to the game.
Let’s hope 2016 brings more opportunities in easier-to-find places!
Sig
I was absolutely certain that Sphere was Reserved. Any chance WotC have surreptitiously taken it off recently?
Thanks for the heads up on Black Knight – found 3 online for $12.50 each which seems to be a pretty good price if they’re in the NM condition they claim to be. 🙂
