Skysovereign:
“On turn five you get to shoot down whatever is pressuring you, and then on turn six you can remove a creature and swing for six in the air, or if they’re lacking blockers, send a full nine at them.”
Unfortunately, its target “Creature or Planeswalker”
Fair. Thanks for catching that!
I’m liking the “Gearhulk” Construct cycle of creatures. I’ve been thinking about Eldritch Evolution and what that card needs to break out as a Tier 1 Standard Deck. Big 5-6 drops with great abilities and ETB triggers are exactly what you want when you are upgrading from a 3-4 drop to a 5-6 drop.
In fact… I’m seeing a A LOT of good ETB effects on creatures in this set so far. Eldritch Evolution gets MUCH better if you have a lot of various ETB effects in your deck. Eldritch Evolution seems more like an even “trade” if you are just upgrading your creature, but if you treat the ETB effects like a toolbox deck… I think that is where Eldritch Evolution will truly shine.
Note that all of the Gearhulks are Mythics, Artifact Creatures and they all seem like good curve toppers for various decks/playstyles…. I think we will definitely have a few winners out of this category. A lot of the other Kaladesh stuff thus far seems fairly “cute”.
I might have to pick up a few of these Gearhulks around $5. I think a few of them could easily hit $10-$15 once people realize most of the “cute” stuff in the set is unplayable. In any case, keep those eyes on ETB effects throughout this set. I think a lot of people are overlooking the raw value in some of these cards.
PREDICTION: ABZAN ETB Tier 1 Deck at some point!!! (Seriously, go take a look at Abzan ETB triggers!) 🙂
I especially like the White Gearhulk (“Cataclysmic”?) and I want a foil for EDH! I definitely need to find a place for this in my Karametra deck and with an ETB trigger like that, I will force myself to:
Cataclysmic Gearhulk
3WW
Artifact Creature – Construct
Vigilance
“When Cataclysmic Gearhulk enters the battlefield, each player chooses from among the non-land permanents he or she controls an artifact, a creature, an enchantment, and a planeswalker, then sacrifices the rest.”
I love how its somewhat “fair” in that it allows my opponents to choose (kinda), but it allows me to choose Karametra for the enchantment, Gearhulk for the Artifact and then a third creature for extra devotion/upside, plus a planeswalker if i have one out. In any case, I imagine this thing wiping tons of creatures, artifacts and enchantments from the board. Sure… you can keep ONE! But the other 27 need to GO! Totally Fair, right? (then we bounce him out/in again, and again…) 🙂
Viewing the Gearhulks as enablers for Eldritch Evolution is excellent analysis. They’re exactly the type of card you’ll want to be getting onto the battlefield early and often. The green one seems on the weaker side to me, and the blue one isn’t always going to trigger anything, but slamming the black and white (and maybe red?) copies into play at every chance is going to be great. Thanks for the input.
And I agree on White hulk for EDH. He’ll be stupendous in my Brago deck.
I hope cliff is feeling better. He had a real frog-in-the-throat on the fast finance podcast.
