PROTRADER: All About That Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy

Bad headline puns aside, it’s true that kid Jace is everywhere these days. That is, if by “everywhere,” you accept “in the headlines” as a fulfillment. The truth is that Jace isn’t the powerhouse in eternal formats he’s made out to be, but he is a good planeswalker that sees play and rightfully is earning a lot of attention right now.

I’m going to start this week’s article with a video I made on the subject (rough transcript quoted below), and then delve into deeper specifics of what I see the future of our newest Jace to be.

Sneak Peak into the MTGPrice Trading App

It started with a simple goal: build the best MTG trading app possible. It’s a goal we believe can revolutionize the way we share our hobby with each other, and we were lucky enough that the community agreed with us. Thanks to your support, we’ve been working behind the scenes for months, conceptualizing, designing, re-designing, improving, and squashing hundreds of bugs along the way.

Now, we’re finally ready to show off the fruits of our labors.

The Beta release of the MTGPrice trading app is coming, and today I want to give you a glimpse into what’s on the way.

There are a ton of awesome things this app can do. We’ve designed it with speed in mind: it should take you no longer than a few moments to search for and find the price of a card. The app will sync flawlessly with your collection on MTGPrice.com, and any trade you make using it will update your collection in all places.

There’s a lot of cool things the app does: it allows you to track the live value of your collection, shows how much the value of your collection grows over time, and even lets you keep up with the latest pricing trends across the board, from your collection and wishlist to Standard or Modern!

It’s the trading system where things really shine. We set out to create the best trading app available, and that’s what we believe we’ve done—we hope you’ll agree. Accomplishing that goal meant attempting something that’s never been done before: automatic trade suggestions based on location. Looking for a particular card on Friday afternoon of a Grand Prix? Simply put it on your wishlist and have the app find someone across the room who has the card and is interested in something you have for trade. This kind of automatic, GPS-specific evolution can completely change the way we acquire cards, making trading easier and more painless than ever before.

Battle for Zendikar Event Deck Revealed!

We finally got a full look at the Battle for Zendikar Event Deck list today, and it’s a doozy.

Smothering Abomination. Whisperwood Elemental. Tasigur, the Golden Fang. Hangarback Walker. Llanowar Wastes. That’s a lot of value packed into these decks, and you can be sure they’ll be selling at above MSRP for the next few weeks.

Now, before you completely pull the panic cord, I want to note a few things. Yes, the price on these chase cards will suffer, no doubt about it. But it’s also not the death knell for them, and chances are if you need these cards to play with, you’re likely supposed to hold them. Back in the day, we saw Thragtusk—which occupied a similar “all over Standard” role as Hangarback—shrugged off multiple reprints and remained more than $20. I don’t expect Hangarback to do quite that well, but it’s worth taking note of. Furthermore, Windswept Heath lost about 30 percent of its value after its own reprinting, so unless you’re getting more than 70 percent of retail for these chase cards, you’re not going to “profit” in the long term by selling yours now with the intent to rebuy in a month.

Still, this is very much going to inhibit the prices of these cards, and while I still like Tasigur as a long-term spec, this does damage its ceiling a bit and push that timeline out even further.

One final note, even if it seems obvious: if you can find these at MSRP, it’s very much worth your time to buy them and trade out the contents from inside, at least for the first few weeks.

PROTRADER: Battle for Zendikar Set Review – Green

Battle for Zendikar has arrived! There’s been a ton said about this set already, from how Expeditions will push all the other prices down (they will), to whether or not the rest of the set “sucks” (the power level is down for sure, but I’m okay with this), to whether there actually is any financial opportunity in the set (Fathom Feeder is quietly up to $3, which I advocated getting in at a buck).

Anyway, that’s all big-picture stuff, and frankly is the typical complaining of Magic players, who are literally complaining about the way $100 bills (Expeditions lands) are being folded inside packs. I’m not here to talk about all that. Instead, I’m here to talk about the green cards we’re getting in Battle for Zendikar, so let’s dig in.
