PROTRADER: PucaPicks for September 1, 2016

I have to admit, I don’t like Future Site much.

I use Puca on mobile a lot, and this is hard to use and slow to load.

On my laptop, it’s sure pretty, and setting your background is awesome. Packaging trades is great. But the emphasis has clearly been on the look and not a lot on the use. I’m trying to keep an open mind for this, but yeah, I would love a rollback or a simplified mobile version. I don’t like having to scroll six times to get through one person’s info.

This week, I want to give you both the things I think you should sell on, as well as a few things to pick up.

  1. Can you please start putting ProTrader at the front of your article series like the other protrader content?

  2. this article has flaws

for one, literally *one* person on the planet wants *one* copy of talisman of progress (and they’re in brazil, one of the worst countries to ship to). so, good luck? might have been a nice thing to include.

for two, you really think a triple-black card has any chance in hell of being in a 4-color commander product? i don’t know if you didn’t read the card or just didn’t think it through, but the quality of this analysis is wanting.

for three, I don’t know why you’re going on about plane-specific names when the only conceivable product on the horizon that could include stage or nykthos is C16, which has never adhered to any kind of plane-specificity. so it’s not like Take the Crown upended our understanding of anything.

ancient stirrings is one fo the best cards in modern, when built around, i don;t think you should brush it off for standard power level. that said, the name has NOTHING to do with kaladesh as we know it (a plane all about invention and what passes for mtg-modernity) so i would bet just about anything against you on the topic of AS being in kaladesh.

cavern of souls: so, it MIGHT be included (but by no means has to be)…in a set that drops SEVEN MONTHS from now? and this is a card we should be eager to dump? you know what, i take it back, this article could help me a lot – I’m putting these on my wishlist right away, in the hopes someone takes your advice.

your pickup section is much better, but there’s still one major stumble: relic seeker is rotating out with kaladesh (and has nowhere near the power level to justify modern play), so that’s a total dead-end.

    1. If cavern of souls is in MM17, it’s absolutely reasonable to think it could start a slow fall in price leading up to the start of spoilers. And the “might be included” part of your argument doesn’t make a difference, because enough people fearing that it could be will lead to the same behavior.
I’m glad you’re fact-checking – it’s good for the writer and readers of these articles, but being less bitchy can only help your argument.

    2. You make a number of points, and I appreciate feedback. So here’s my take on your take.

I don’t list cards based on who wants the card, or how many want lists it’s on. My view is purely on the points, primarily because the amount of people who want a card can vary greatly from day to day.

I do think Mikaeus has a chance of being printed. Triple-color cards are powerful. Mana cost isn’t always relevant, and if they do indeed make a four-color Zombie deck (lacking white) that’s base black, Mikaeus would have a lot of equity and power.

It seems you and I agree about plane-specific names? I think they aren’t committed to the names and stories, outside of the big Standard sets.

I’m not brushing off AS; I think it would be very powerful in the current standard, and given what it does, plus with us heading into an artifact block, I think it could be printed. But I could be wrong.

I’m absolutely high on dumping Cavern of Souls right now, and if you listen to the new MTG Fast Finance, Travis has me mostly talked into sending out my foil copy from a Commander deck. It’s at an all-time high, do you think it’ll see $80 before it gets reprinted?

I wasn’t preaching Relic Seeker for Modern, I like it as a low-risk pickup for casual play on a long-term basis as a budget alternative to Stoneforge Mystic.

      Thanks for reading and commenting!

  3. Thank you for making these protrader only. It makes for much more efficient trading {I personally don’t use Puca much anymore} rather than everyone and their mother being able to read the article and then hound Puca for them.

  4. Thanks for the heads up! I am really enjoying this series, very succinct and informative. I just unloaded my 3 copies of Ob Nixilis before reading the entire article. 🙂

How do you feel about picking up the new Tamiyo at around 1200 points? It seems like it has a chance to break out into standard when CoCo rotates. Bant lists will surely be around after rotation but they will need to change it up and Tamiyo might be the 4drop they go to. Even if she doesn’t break out into standard, her ultimate is NUTSO and other abilities seem to be great for Commander. Seems like an auto include for Superfriends. With 4 Loyalty and Doubling Season, you can also ultimate her right away, so there is that too!

Should I hold off on the non-foils and target foils only? Or are non-foils getting cheap enough now?

    1. I’ve alluded to it, but let me say it clearly: I think Take the Crown is going to really impact the amount of EMN opened. I think that’ll keep supply low.

1200 is a little high for my taste. I’d be in around 900/2500-3000 on foils for the EDH reasons you mentioned.
