Magic has very few historians. BDM is the Pro Tour Historian1, and he does an excellent job (as does his plucky sidekick, Rich Hagon). A big reason why MaRo started Drive to Work was to serve as an oral history of the game, and several of his episodes focus on telling stories from the game’s distant past.
Outside of that, though, there isn’t much. Magic is such a different game now than it was even a couple years ago, and it is really hard to explain that to people who weren’t there to experience it firsthand. While past experience is valuable, there are a lot of ingrained behaviors and assumptions that older players have that are becoming liabilities. We are in the early stages of significant changes to Magic—is there insight to be gained in looking to the past?

Legacy is dead. Legacy is dying. Legacy just had its biggest weekend of the year. Legacy is not dying. Star City Games is trying to kill Legacy. Star City Games is the sole reason people care about Legacy. Legacy is too expensive. Legacy is cheaper than Standard. Legacy is the next Vintage. Modern is the next Legacy. Legacy is the funnest/coolest/best format ever! Nothing beside remains.

Last week, Star City Games made an impactful announcement early in the week; too early for me to put together a cohesive article by Wednesday. The announcement was regarding the SCG Open Series, now known as the SCG Tour.
While many changes were made, the way the rebranded Open series treats Legacy is the component that had Twitter aflutter. The total number of SCG events has been reduced, there are now three seasons a year instead of four, SCG won’t support many events on the west coast, and Legacy is gone from the invitational. Also, Legacy prizes are no longer cash, but event wall tickets. Also, there’s only one Legacy Open in the first third of next year.
That sound you hear is the rending of garments.

You probably cheated and read the article title, so you already have an idea, but I’m going to stubbornly pretend like you’re struggling here so I can post more card images.
Surely you must what I’m getting at now? (Yes.) No? (Yes.) Here’s a few more hints:
“Ah-ha!” I’m imagining you saying. “I’ve got it now!”
