I know you were all concerned about my wellbeing but fear not, I was simply on vacation. I have returned, eager to share with all of you my indispensable Opinions About Magic Cards. Throne of Eldraine has lit a lot fires under a lot of butts, with two of the more prevalent discussions regarding Oko’s strength, and the viability of Paradoxical Urza in Modern. Although now that I think about it the latter is unrelated to TOE at all, since it uses no cards from that set, and is simply occurring within the same chronological space. Whatever. We’ll talk about both!

While I personally find the overall design of Throne of Eldraine to be sophomoric, there’s no disputing that it’s bringing a great deal of potent cards to Standard, and possibly Modern and beyond. Just today, Drown in the Loch was spoiled, a two mana counterspell that may possibly become a common component of control-oriented builds in Modern. There’s no shortage of cards of this nature in TOE, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the set impacts each format.

I wrote an entire damn intro to this article thinking that Hogaak was going and there wouldn’t be anything else too spicy. After all, why would they? Modern Horizons hasn’t really felt like it had a chance to blossom, with Hogaak having arrived on the same boat. Tossing Hogaak would give everyone a chance to experiment with MH1 cards and wouldn’t spend too much “format change equity.” Instead, WotC tosses Hogaak, AND Faithless Looting, AND unbans Stoneforge Mystic? That’s like, an entire year’s worth of changes at once! Before there wasn’t going to be immediate meaningful change, and now there’s too much.
