Howdy! And welcome to… VINTAGE SET REVIEWS: INVASION!
Invasion is one of those sets/blocks that I have a personal fondness for, even though it predates my competitive involvement with Magic. On a larger scale, Invasion was a big hit for Wizards, coming off of two previous blocks (Urza’s and Masques, respectively) that did some serious damage to the game’s reputation capital. It was largely the same kind of effect the first Ravnica block had1, although I think Ravnica was a much cleaner and better designed set overall. This is also around the time where Magic was “famously” featured on ESPN2, a sort of Magic culture meme that has largely died out (along with other favorites like “mise tings”).

Brainstorm Brewery #216 – Corbin’s Back and Other Bad News
Corbin’s on this one and he knows he was pranked. He pretends it doesn’t bother him, but we know better. The episode took a while to get rolling and honestly, most of it isn’t suitable for you hearing and will probably be relegated to after hours. We’ll do one of those soon. One or more. We have a lot in the works – new Patreon rewards, Tee Spring, the works. This episode was by the numbers and that’s not exactly boring, but it doesn’t make for exciting show notes writing.
I have to admit, I’m really enjoying this series, as I delve into older and older sets looks for not the most valuable cards, but the cards that are in highest demand (as of this writing).
We are reaching the point at which power isn’t as much of a factor as availability is. Most of these are either printed once on a much smaller scale, or they have been printed several times and this is only one of the several versions available.
My goal remains the same: I want to find the cards that are both worth enough points to warrant picking out of bulk or binders, and also on enough want lists that I can send the card out relatively rapidly. These aren’t all the cards worth picking, these are just the ones easiest to get rid of–a prime consideration of mine at all times.
